Festa della Madonna della Bruna

Celebrated since 1380, the Festa della Madonna della Brunais is just one of the region's many evocative ceremonies. The spectacle is dedicated to the city's patron saint, Madonna della Bruna, whose effigy is transported throughout the city in a carro, an intricate, hand-made carriage decorated with Biblical images. The carro is made by local artisans, and takes more than a year to complete. Throughout the procession, however, the carro is attacked by villagers, who rip it slowly to shreds until the Madonna is retrieved.
