La Sfilata dei Turchi is a yearly festival that is truly a feast for the senses. Potenza leaps to life with a bright and beautiful parade and exhibition, with local children and adults playing the major roles. Elaborate costumes and intricate choreography help recreate the events of an undetermined date in May hundreds of years ago, when Potenza was besieged by marauding Turks. Angels, depicted by children in glowing white, lead the invaders away, saving the city and its citizens. Fire-breathers, jugglers, acrobats and mimes add to the theatric appeal.
